This poster is for a gig we played in New York City during the CMJs. I do believe the Canadian Government paid us to go. They even gave us a $100 each. Look: Sloan! Eric’s Trip! Thrush Hermit! Hardship Post!

It was a CMJ gig… 1992 or 93. I drove down with Hardship Post and witnessed some of the most fantastic, instinctive “holy fuck!” driving from Matt Clarke, who was driving the big white 15 passenger rental van. We had, none of us, any idea where we were going so we ended up coming into Manhattan through the Lincoln Tunnel straight into midtown rush hour traffic. All of a sudden we were getting squeezed by an arsehole trying to pass on the inside lane, forcing Matt out into an oncoming bus. We all shrieked in unison as Matt, instead of dropping back (there was nowhere to drop to!) did the ultimate cojones thing - he gunned it forward past the arsehole, veering right at the last second. The bus missed us by centimeters. Matt’s a lawyer now. Bet he’s a good one, with nerves like that.
I’ve compared myself - usually unfavorably - to this performance of Matt’s every time I’ve had to do any remotely ballsy driving.
That’s funny. When I toured with Hardship Post he was a lousy driver and no one wanted him behind the wheel.
Pick on the other hand…
